In 1972 the first two Santa Gertrudis bulls were purchased locally and mated
with Afrikaner/Pinzgauer cows. In 1975 the bull "Obelix" was purchased and
the "Obelix Santa Gertrudis Zucht" was registered at the Santa Gertrudis
association of South Africa. 50 cows formed the foundation of the stud.
During the 1980's time was used to improve the quality of the stud. The
1990's with its severe dry periods turned out to be a hard time for the
stud. The number of cattle was reduced to a minimum and the cattle were
spreaded throughout Namibia on different farms, purely just to survive.
During this time stud breeding activities were at their minimum. The above
average rain seasons of the 2000's made it possible to bring back all cattle
to Ongangasemba ranch and stud breeding activities could be intensified
again.
In 2003 "Obelix Santa Gertrudis Zucht" and other breeders from the northern
part of Namibia held their first Northern Santa Gertrudis production sale.
Mainly bulls but also females and commercial cattle are sold on this annual
production sale which is held at the end of July each year. In 2005 "Obelix
Santa Gertrudis Zucht" exhibited for the first time at the annual Windhoek
Show, the national agricultural and trade show held in the capital city
of Namibia.
Today "Obelix Santa Gertrudis Zucht" consists of 600 purebred Santa's of
which 100 are registered at the Santa Gertrudis association of South Africa.
"Obelix Santa Gertrudis Zucht" can look back on 31 years of successful,
external farming.
