Ongangasemba Ranch was purchased in 1953 by Wolfgang and Elisabeth Wilckens. The main activity during those early years was meat
and milk production. Average rain seasons permitted the Wilckens to keep up to 1200 head of cattle on there 10 000 ha (25 000 acres)
ranch, on an external basis.
In 1974 the second oldest son, Immo, joined his parents on the farm. He married his wife Almut and took over management of the ranch
in 1978. Due to the good infrastructure which was established during this time, a significant number of wildlife has accumulated on the
ranch. During the 1990's the Wilckens joined the tourism industry. Today cattle farming and tourism go along hand in hand and
Ongangasemba ranch has become an internationally known travel and business destination.
